BREEDING PHILOSOPHY

Our cattle breeding philosophies are the same as our commercial clients. We believe that maintaining an efficient, productive cow herd is the only option for successful, self-sustaining profitable cattle production.

The Palgrove stud and commercial breeding herds run under very real commercial production systems, so we have been able to easily identify superior cows that demonstrate the following economically relevant traits:
1. Constitution – ability to ride out highs and lows of nutrition.
2. Reproductive Ability – ability to rebreed in a short joining period under prevailing nutrition levels.
3. Adaptability – ability to respond positively to fluctuating nutritional and climatic environments.
4. Production Efficiency – ability to convert available feed.

Every Palgrove bull that leaves the front gate is a product of a disciplined genetic breeding system with emphasis on moderate birth, efficient weight gain, ability to lay down fat cover off-grass or in the feedlot and survivability. He must be able to add real value to a purebred stud or commercial crossbreeding female herd and our client’s profits.

To achieve this, we place selection pressure on multiple, balanced EBV traits, then only cattle that pass our strict visual appraisal for structure, quality, doing ability, temperament and soundness make it into our sale drafts. Commercially unprofitable cattle are eliminated. This has been the same philosophy that has served us for over 40 years.
